Over the past few years has been an increase in the number of people going for therapy and that is great. In 2021, a study showed that 46% of American think going to therapy is a sign of weakness but that same year, the number of people in therapy increased drastically. The stigma that has been associated with therapy has stopped a lot of people from getting the help that they need.
Therapy can help you to improve symptoms of mental health issues. Treatment or drugs can only go so far but in therapy, you’ll learn coping strategies and get a long-lasting effect. Research has confirmed that medications only work to reduce mental health symptoms but therapy is more in-depth and the skills acquired from sessions are life-long. Although both work hand in hand, in the long run, therapy has a more lasting effect.
As much as we have become even more aware of the benefits of therapy, it’s not necessarily for everyone. According to the American psychological association you should consider seeing a therapist when you’re in a state of distress or something significant interferes with your life. So, how do you know if therapy is right for you?
1. You feel Stuck regularly
There are times in our lives when we feel stuck like nothing is working. Therapy is a way to help you figure out why you’re stuck. You do this by figuring out your goals and all the anxieties that may be holding you down. If you constantly feel stuck regardless of what you do, talking to a therapist can help you figure things out, so you can move beyond being constantly stuck.
2. Uncontrollable rage, anger and confusion
Anger is a natural emotion that we all feel at some point but when it remains it might grow into rage or resentment. Seeking a therapist’s support to process these emotions and their root when they don’t pass is great. If you find yourself constantly making violent and harmful decisions, it might be the right time to try out therapy.
3. Constant Intrusive thoughts and social withdrawal
We all have worries and anxiety from our daily lives, we can’t really escape them. But when intrusive thoughts take up most of your day and cause you to have overwhelming anxiety, therapy might just be right for you because it can help you deal with it.
4. You went through trauma
A lot of us experience trauma in our lives that are left unresolved. It could be childhood trauma, trauma from loss, or trauma from a bad experience, regardless of the type, unresolved trauma can spiral into mental health issues like PTSD, anxiety, and depression.
All of these could stop you from living your life to the fullest. Therapists have various different ways of helping patients deal with and process the trauma.
5. Feelings of Overwhelm
Do you constantly feel overwhelmed with life, work, people, and just everything? Constant feelings of overwhelm can even lead to detrimental physical health issues. Feelings of overwhelm can also be a sign of depression. Therapy can help you work through the reasons why you constantly feel this way and show you how to deal with it.
6. Fatigue and Hopelessness
Fatigue and hopelessness are the first tell-tale signs of mental health issues. They are almost always a symptom of clinical depression and anxiety. If you find yourself struggling to get out of bed way too often and feel distressed at the thought of carrying out regular activities, therapy would be a great way to process these feelings. Talking to a professional about how you feel can help you find hope and the energy you need to live fully again.
We all go through a lot of things daily but when those things begin to manifest in your life and push you into a cycle of pain, hurt, dissatisfaction, anxiety, and the likes, therapy might just be right for you. You can talk to family and people you trust about wanting to see a therapist and once you decide, give it a try with high expectations.
Remember to live life and don’t let life live you!!
